Marvel over this amazing preservation of a starfish that lived 448 to 443 million years ago. Starfish fossils are quite extraordinary as typically these soft-bodied creatures decay before the fossilization process can occur. This creature must have been rapidly covered in sediment, enough sediment to create an anaerobic environment starving bacteria of the opportunity to decompose the animal's body. This set of circumstances allowed for this amazing fossilization to occur.
This delicate gray stone plaque measures approximately 3-3/4" x 3-1/2". The rust-colored fossilized impression of the starfish measures just over 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" in length. One of the incredible aspects of this specimen is that you can view the textured, bumpy surface of the starfish. It is truly quite impressive.
