Also called Dragon Stone or Dragon Egg, Septarian nodules are amazing prehistoric formations named for the Latin word "Septum" meaning "partition" for the cracks and divisions within the stone. They are concretions or nodules that formed over 50 million years ago on the sea floor. Due to a chemical attraction, mud balls formed along the ocean floor encapsulating decaying sea life. Over time, their decomposition left behind the building blocks that would later form the minerals inside of the nodule. As the oceans receded and water levels changed, they were exposed to the air where they dried out and cracked. Over time, crystals formed within the nodules, filling the cracks and voids to create these remarkable formations.
Due to the nature of the crystalline structure, Septarians are known for their fissure lines, banding, druzy pockets, caverns, and cracks. These features are a natural aspect of the stone, adding to its charm and character, and are not considered flaws.
