Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, is a rich forest-green jasper with inclusions of hematite creating the red flecking or splotches on the stone resembling drops of blood. Occasionally, the stone will have areas of Jasper with a matte finish, patches of white or clear Agate, or inclusions of pyrite ("fools gold").
Bloodstone has roots in many cultures and religions, including Christianity where it is believed the red spots are drops of blood from Jesus during the crucifixion. Metaphysically, Bloodstone is believed to lend courage, calm and revitalize the mind, and heightens intuition. It is also believed to reduce irritability and revitalize the exhausted mind.
Due to the nature of the crystalline structure, Bloodstone is known for its fissure lines, banding, and cracks. These features are a natural aspect of the stone, adding to its charm and character and are not considered flaws.
