Sand Dollar Fossil

Regular price $12.00 Sale

Own an authentic, fossilized sand dollar specimen. This extinct species of sand dollar lived 145 to 65 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. An urchin, this animal crawled the sea floor with tube feet and burrowed in the sand to find food. You'll marvel over the intricate, feather-like detail preserved along the star-shaped petals. It is quite astonishing that this fossil retains this level of detail through the mineralization process and survived millions of years of tectonic shift and weatherization. Polished to a high-gloss, the surface of the fossil has a smooth, glass-like finish while the underside retains the rough, concrete-like rocky texture.

Each specimen is unique, like a snowflake - no two are identical. We work to source the highest quality specimens; our sand dollars are of the finest grade available. Each specimen features a camel-brown and sand colored mineralization pattern, some are a deeper shade than others. And unlike their modern-day cousins, this species has a prominent dome-shape. Any cracks or fissures you might find remind us of the fossil's age and are encapsulated and preserved in the specimen. They are now part of the fossil's character. Our sand dollar specimens are from Madagascar.

This specimen measures 2- 1/8" in diameter and features a mottled camel-brown and sand colored mineralization pattern. Each sand dollar specimen is unique, you would be purchasing this specific fossil. With your purchase, we will send you a small information card to store with your treasure.
We hope you enjoy your new Treasure!
