Septarians are amazing prehistoric formations. They are concretions (mud balls) formed during the Cretaceous period, 145 to 66 million years ago, that have in essence - fossilized. Mud gathered around decaying marine life, drawn to it through a chemical attraction, forming a ball. That area of the ocean then receded, exposing the ball of mud causing it to dry out and crack. Over time, the original structure was replaced with different minerals filling the cracks and allowing crystals to grow, forming a geode. Some of the geodes contain calcite crystals which were formed from calcium deposited from the decomposing sea life.

It was discovered that the mud cracked in seven radiating points. Therefore, these treasures are named after the Latin word for seven, "septum." These amazing formations are also known as Dragon's Eggs or Dragon Stone, named for their reptilian-like patterns.

Once mined, the septarians are carved into egg shapes and polished to a high gloss shine. A portion of the egg's outer wall is removed allowing you an opportunity to explore the stunning, crystalline interior. The cavern-like interior is carpeted with ultra-fine, shimmering, espresso-brown to charcoal-black crystals.

Each septarian is unique, you are purchasing this exact specimen. This piece measures approximately 3" tall. This incredible specimen has a deep, interior crevice lined with chocolate brown micro-fine crystals. It is truly a beautiful piece!  This specimen is from Madagascar.

With your purchase, we will send you a complimentary handcrafted wood stand, like the one pictured. These simplistic wood rings serve as a fitting base for your new egg. They are in the raw wood state, allowing you the creative freedom to finish the piece however you would like (paint, stain, leave natural). We also will include a small information card to store with your specimen.  We hope you enjoy your new Treasure!
